Virtual monitor glasses are display glasses that turn one USB-C cable into a large floating screen — your laptop, phone, or handheld sees them as an external monitor, and the optics place the image several feet in front of you. Across the 24 display models in our database that claim a 126-inch or larger virtual screen, claimed sizes run 126–385 inches at recorded prices from $149 to $849, and the text-sharpness figures, where recorded, run from 38 to 49 pixels per degree. What are virtual monitor glasses?

A pair of virtual monitor glasses is a wearable external display. Two micro-OLED panels sit above birdbath optics that magnify the image into a fixed virtual screen — the same architecture explained in our birdbath vs waveguide guide — and the host device drives them like any plugged-in monitor. The screen is 3DoF: it can follow your head or anchor in place while you turn toward it, but you cannot walk around it. Within the table below, the window itself spans 43.5–58° of diagonal field of view, which is why manufacturers quote the size as a cinema-style equivalent (“a 147-inch screen at 4 metres”) rather than a desk measurement — see the virtual screen size definition for how to read those claims.

Will virtual monitor glasses work with your laptop or phone?

The one hard requirement: the host’s USB-C port must output video over DisplayPort Alt Mode, not just charge and transfer data. Most recent MacBooks, iPads, Windows laptops, and gaming handhelds qualify; many cheaper phones and tablets do not — InAir’s compatibility and setup guide keeps a device-by-device walkthrough.

For its own UltraWide Mode, XREAL’s official documentation publishes the cleanest supported/unsupported split in the category. Supported: iPad, Mac, Windows PCs and handhelds, the Steam Deck, and Samsung DeX devices. Not supported: iPhone, standard Android phones, the Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation. Two footnotes from the same page worth knowing before you buy: computers must run the glasses as an extended display (not mirrored) for ultrawide to work, and XREAL specifies a minimum 1 m virtual screen distance.

How do you get multiple virtual monitors?

The screen count is set by software, and the current landscape splits three ways:

  • XREAL One series — on the glasses. The XREAL One and One Pro render UltraWide Mode on the built-in X1 chip: a 16:18, 21:9, or 32:9 virtual screen with native 3DoF anchoring, no companion app required, which is why it works across platforms (XREAL’s UltraWide documentation; Digital Trends’ XREAL One review covers the mode in practice). XREAL’s earlier desktop companion software is no longer maintained (XREAL developer notice) — the on-device mode replaced it.
  • VITURE — the SpaceWalker app. SpaceWalker is VITURE’s current multi-display software on Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS: multiple independent virtual displays with 3DoF head tracking, an Extend Desktop mode, and 120/90/60 Hz refresh options (release notes). It is the main software argument in the VITURE Luma Pro vs XREAL One matchup.
  • RayNeo GT series — a dedicated tracking chip. RayNeo’s GT-series glasses pair the display chip with a second 3DoF chip and ship Pinned, Steady, and Follow viewing modes (RayNeo’s launch announcement).

Is the text sharp enough to work in?

Pixels per degree (PPD) is angular resolution: horizontal pixels divided by the degrees of field of view they span. It predicts text sharpness better than raw resolution — a 1080p panel stretched across a wide FOV looks softer than the same panel in a narrow one, and around 40+ PPD text starts looking print-like (UploadVR measured the Meta Ray-Ban Display at roughly 42 PPD). 21 of the 81 products in our database carry a PPD figure, so the table above has honest gaps. Among the display models that record one: the VITURE One Lite leads at 55 PPD on a narrow 43° window, a 49-PPD group covers the XREAL Air 2, XREAL Air 2 Pro, XREAL One Pro, INAIR 2 Pro, and TCL NxtWear S, the Lenovo Legion Glasses 2 sits at 44, a 41–42 band holds the XREAL One, RayNeo Air 3s, and RayNeo Air 4 Pro, the ASUS ROG XREAL R1 lands right on the print-like threshold at 40, and the Rokid Max 2 trades sharpness for size at 38 PPD on a 50° window. Rule of thumb from those numbers: for spreadsheet-and-terminal work, prefer the 44+ PPD pairs; for movies and games, FOV matters more than PPD.

Virtual screen size

The Claimed virtual screen row in our spec tables records the manufacturer’s stated screen-size equivalent: the diagonal of a flat screen that would span the same field of view at a stated simulated distance. It is a marketing-friendly restatement of FOV, not an independent spec — a 330-inch claim at 10 metres and a 147-inch claim at 4 metres can describe similar optics — which is why the data table above prints claimed size, FOV, and PPD side by side, and why we exclude claims we cannot trace (GOOVIS G3 Max) from aggregates rather than let them set records.

DisplayPort Alt Mode

DisplayPort Alternate Mode is the USB-C feature that carries a native video signal over the same port that charges the device. Tethered display glasses depend on it: a port with power-only or data-only USB-C shows nothing, no matter the cable. Manufacturer compatibility lists (XREAL’s UltraWide device list) and independent guides (InAir’s setup guide) are the fastest way to check a specific phone, laptop, or handheld before buying.

Can AR glasses replace a monitor?

They can serve as one. The display models in our database claim virtual screens from 126 to 385 inches, driven over a single USB-C cable using DisplayPort Alt Mode. The practical limits are a 43-58 degree field of view that shows one large window at a time, 3DoF anchoring rather than a walk-around workspace, and text sharpness that depends on pixels per degree rather than raw panel resolution.

Do virtual monitor glasses work with iPhone or Nintendo Switch?

XREAL's UltraWide Mode documentation lists iPad, Mac, Windows PCs and handhelds, the Steam Deck, and Samsung DeX devices as supported, and marks the iPhone, standard Android phones, the Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation as not supported. The baseline requirement for any tethered pair is a USB-C port that outputs video over DisplayPort Alt Mode.

How do you get multiple monitors with AR glasses?
